A Pittsburgh firefighter tested positive for COVID-19 today. The firefighter testing positive was never at work once experiencing symptoms & self reported the symptoms while off duty. The public was not exposed to that firefighter. See our press release below.

We’re only one day away from #PGHFireOps! Tomorrow, our state legislators will trade in their usual office suits for PPE (personal protective equipment) clothing and experience a day as a firefighter. They’ll extinguish a fire, perform a search and rescue, learn to operate aerial ladders and more.

For a firefighter, there’s no such thing as “that’s not in my job description.” We’re not only first responders to fires, but to medical emergencies, car accidents, natural disasters and more. It’s not just a job to us, it’s in our nature.

You can also support your local firefighters by learning more about, and supporting, the following 2019-2020 House Bills introduced to the PA State Legislature:

- House Bill 432: Workers’ Compensation for First Responders with PTSI (post-traumatic stress injury)
- House Bill 1459: Emergency Responder Mental Wellness and Stress Management Program
- House Bills 1627 & 1628: Renewal of the PA Fire and EMS Grant Program

On September 4th, your legislators will suit up and spend a day experiencing the duties of a firefighter. From a burning building to a medical emergency, these individuals will learn what it’s like to make life-saving decisions in a matter of seconds. As a result of the physical and mental stressors firefighters are exposed to on the job, they are at a greater risk of suffering from cardiovascular disease and behavioral health issues than those in other occupations. Despite these life-altering dangers, they suit up every day and save lives. Fire Ops 101, an event occurring on Sept. 4, brings awareness to the difficulties firefighters courageously face on a daily basis.

We’re proud to partner with MSASafety to host Fire Ops 101, an immersive experience for our state’s legislators to experience a day in the boots of a firefighter. We stumbled across our President, Ralph Sicuro catching up in the hallway with IAFF General President Schaitberger.

This is George Gross. He’s a retired Pittsburgh Fire Fighter. George hasn’t been in contact w/ his family since Friday and is last known to be in the Beckley, WV area. Anyone w/info about George please contact Crimestoppers of West Virginia at 304-255-7867. Please repost.

The National Park Service needs assistance in locating a missing individual, retired firefighter George Gross has gone missing and was last known to be in the Beckley, West Virginia area on January 12, 2018. His family has not heard from him since he spoke to them that afternoon and expressed interest in hiking in or around New River Gorge National River. His vehicle has not been found in the park.

We were pretty excited that Governor Tom Wolf took time out of his day today to share a lunch with some of our firefighters.

Today we remember the many people who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Never Forget.

Glad to see our firefighters out there early and often supporting our endorsed candidates!

Thank you to everyone who has reached out with concerns about the condition of our firefighters. An overnight high rise fire that reached 7 alarms has taken its toll on them. One firefighter was transferred from the scene to the hospital and has since been released. Several firefighters were treated on the scene for minor injuries and burns and all are doing ok. We will update throughout the day as needed.
